Introduction
The Company was originally established on 7th June, 1980 with the three-fold responsibilities of production, transmission and distribution, with the Bakhrabad gas field as its only source. Later, it was transformed into a transmission and distribution company with the transfer of the Bakhrabad and Feni gas field to BGFCL. The Company is responsible for gas supply in the Chittagong Division excluding Brahmanbaria district and Kashba and Bancharampur Upazillas (outside its franchise area). The company set off its journey on 20 May, 1984 through gas marketing commercially.
Present Status
As continuity of success of BGSL in implementing project, eight more projects is added to the activities of the company. The projects are-
- Bakhrabad -Demra gas transmission pipe lines project.
- Bakhrabad gas field development project-2nd phase(Well 6,7 and 8)
- Feni gas field development project (work over of 1 no. well)
- Gas supply to 2 x 210 Megawatt Raojan power plant project
- Meghna-Bakhrabad gas transmission pipe lines project
- Salda-Bakhrabad gas transmission pipe lines project
- Third natural gas development project (BGSL Part)
- Grameen gas distribution project (BGSL Part)
By the end of June 2008, the network of BGSL totaled 6091.50 km pipe line which includes 67.46 km transmission pipe lines, 263.64 km lateral pipe lines and 5,710.40 km distribution network pipe lines. During 2007-08, BGSL sold 2826.75 million cubic meter gas and purchased 2803.27 million cubic meter gas from BGFCL, SGFL, BAPEX and Sangu gas field and Feni gas field from Petrobangla.
By the end of December 2008, BGSL had a customer base of about 4,48,477. Among the bulk customer of BGSL, there are five power and three fertilizer plants. At present, the daily gas supply to the BGSL franchise area is about 280-285 mmcf against the daily gas demand of about 360 mmcf. So the gas deficit is 75-80 mmcf/day.
