Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC)

Introduction


Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation was established by Ordinance No. LXXXVIII of 1976. It began to function from 1977 with 3(three) Oil Marketing Companies, 2 (two) Blending Plants, 1 (one) LPG Bottling Plants (LPGL) and a refinery (ERL) as its subsidiaries.

Functions


  1. To acquire, import crude petroleum and other refined petroleum products;
  2. To import Refined Petroleum Products
  3. To refine crude petroleum and manufacture of various grades of refined petroleum products;
  4. To set up refineries and ancillary facilities;
  5. To set up lubricating plants including plants for recycling or revamping of used lubricants;
  6. To process and set up facilities for processing of refinery waste or residual products;
  7. To plan and install petroleum (crude and refined) storage facilities;
  8. To export petroleum and petroleum products;
  9. To act as managing agents of, or to enter into any management or any other agreement or contract with, any firm or company.

Present Status


BPC imports nearly 1.2 million ton crude oil and 2.6 million ton refined petroleum product annually. As per the decision of the Government in 2008 BPC off-loaded 30% shares of its 2 Subsidiaries i.e Jamuna Oil Company Limited and Meghna Petroleum Limited. BMRE of Eastern Refinery Ltd and construction of deep sea unloading facilities for crude and refined oil (SPM project) are under the process of implementation. BMRE of Eastern Refinery will increase refining capacity up to 4 million ton per year. Radar type auto-tank gauging system, reconstruction of oil import tanker receiving pipe line from DOJ-7 to LJ-4 at Chittagong , construction of pipeline from Dhaka Airport Railway station to Kurmitola Aviation Depot, construction of Mongla oil installation are going on so the downloading will be easier, quicker and hazard-free.
